Hallux rigidus

Arthritis of the first metatarsalphalangeal joint (big toe joint) with limitation of motion

Symptoms

• Joint stiffness noted in extension of the first toe over the first metatarsal


• Sharp pain to the soft tissues surrounding the joint related to motion against the bone spurring surrounding the joint.


• Achy quality pain related to abnormal motion of the first metatarsalphalangeal joint.

Treatment

• Stiff soled shoe to decrease the extension bending forces occurring at the big toe joint


• Rocker style shoe to decrease abnormal bending pressures in the big toe joint


• Over the Counter or custom orthotic to control abnormal foot pronation


• Antinflammatory medication including ibuprofen or naproxen to decrease inflammation and pain


• Selective and limited use of cortisone injections to help decrease inflammation of the joint soft tissue
