Deep Peroneal Neuritis
The deep peroneal nerve runs on the top of the foot and gives sensation to the first web space which is located between the first and second metatarsal bone as well as sensation to the first and second toe.
Sympotms
• Radiating sharp pain to the top of the foot extending to the first and second toes
• Possible numbness to the top of the first and second toe and first webspace
• Pain made worse with pressure from the throat portion of the shoe that come in contact with the nerve.
Treatment
• Eliminating pressure with adequate depth shoe and adjustable lacing system
• Choice of shoe that eliminates all pressure on the top of the foot
• Padding on the inside of the tongue to eliminate pressure on the nerve
• Ice twice daily
• Non-steroidal antinflammatory medications like ibuprofen or naproxen
