Bunion (Hallux Valgus)

Deformity and prominence of the first metatarsal with deviation of the first toe toward the second

Symptoms

• Achy quality pain at the big toe joint related to abnormal stress on the soft tissues surrounding the joint.

• Sharp radiating pain on the inside portion of the first metatarsal related to irritation of the nerve that gives sensation to the inside portion of the first toe. Nerve irritation is related to pressure from the surface of the shoe.

Treatment

• Wide toe box portion of the shoe to reduce pressure on the prominent first metatarsal bone

• Supportive shoe with torsional stiffness to help support foot

• Shoe with removable liner to accommodate an orthotic device

• Padding to take pressure off of the prominent first metatarsal bone

• Surgical correction of bunion deformity.
