Plantar Fibroma

Plantar Fibroma (plantar fibromatosis) is a benign soft tissue mass generally occurring within the midarch region on the bottom of the foot. The soft tissue mass represents a thickening of the connective tissue within the plantar fascia ligament as it courses from the heel bone to the base of the toes.

Symptoms

  • Painful or painless soft tissue mass
  • Not associated with swelling or color changes of the surrounding skin
  • Slowly progressive in size with possible spreading to the midarch region.

Radiography

  • X-rays not indicated
  • MRI only if abnormal clinical presentation

Treatment

  • Observation without treatment
  • Padding to relieve pressure on fibroma
  • Custom orthotic to relieve pressure on fibroma
  • Serial cortisone injections to diminish size of fibroma
  • Surgical excision based on pain while walking
